CREATING NEW PATTERNS   by Jim Wintringham

Hi All... Here is my first attempt at making a rhythm. I picked a midi song with a solid; steady beat "Ride Like The Wind, By Chris Cross". Here is the process I followed:

1. Play the midi file in a sequencer program (like Cakewalk or Power Tracks)... note the parts of the song you want to capture. I did this on a sheet of paper... writing down the measure number, and the number of measures to capture for each part. Make sure the midi is in the key of C (use the transpose process in your sequencer to set it)

2. We are limited to 5 channels to build the style:

Drums..... Channel 10

Bass ..... Channel 11

Chord 1 Channel 12

Chord 2 Channel 13

Chord 3 Channel 14

So, I selected the channels with the most data (not the melody track), and assigned them to the proper channel. I didn’t try this on this song...but I think you could assign more than one track to a channel (if you use the same instrument) . Now , I saved the modified song (using ‘save as’ ... and putting it in a new folder), as a type 0 midi file format.

3. Next, I loaded in the Music Data Management software (program 2... the only one I downloaded). I found out the screen display needs to be at least 1024 X 786 for the program to properly display. Under ‘File/ preference/ midi’, I selected the Casio as my midi device (the ***OUT). And ‘ File/ preference/ directory’... to point to the modified midi file.

4. Next, I opened the Rhythm Converter (the 2nd box icon.. top left of display). Under ‘File/ Open SMF’, I selected my modified midi file. Then, I entered in the measure / length information to the boxes. For my first attempt... I didn’t worry about the ‘Element editor or OTP (the tone instrument one touch button)

5. Then, I selected the ‘File/ convert to pattern’.... named the file, and save it.

6. On the main display, I selected ‘User Rhythm’ on the computer side. Under ‘File/ preference/ directory’, point to the folder containing the pattern file I just made. Then click on the Refresh button (the blue arrows circle). The right side (for me...with midi cables), points to the wk3000. I refreshed that side also.

7. Then I highlighted the new pattern on the computer side, and highlighted the user slot I wanted to use in the Casio, pressed the transfer button ( arrow between the two list... the one pointing to the Casio). And the transfer was complete.

To play the new pattern... I am set in the ‘fingered mode’.... press the intro button, form a "C" chord, and the song starts . I then switch between variation 1 and 2 (I don’t need to continue holding the "C"...as the variations hold the song progressions also). The ‘ending’ hold the actual bridge part... So I just form the "C" chord, and switch back to the 1st variation, to continue the song. This makes a nice background for improvised melody playing (I like the 075 Feed Dist Gt)
