Tips on using the Casio WK series song recorder
  By Jim Wintringham

Yes, we've been reading the manual, but sometimes the keyboard responds differently that I expect.

It does take on a 'mind of it's own', at times....I can usually just try to 'back up' to a point that is stable. This can happen if I get to hurried in inputting commands, It is a slow processor.

• Perform step 2, below, within five seconds after entering record standby.
I never saw the word "standby" on my LCD screen. Does it show or am I to assume that if I press the button twice, it IS on standby.

1. The standby is represented by the flashing 'REC' at the top right of the display. It will continue flashing...until you start playing. You can use the ‘yes/ no’ buttons on the number pad to choose the ‘song slot’ you want to record (this is the part you need to do within the 5 second window). There are 5 ‘slots’ ...giving you the ability to record 5 separate songs.
The ‘Play’ song is the same....you can select the song (0 to4) you want to play...within the 5 sec. window of time.

The level meters for tracks 11 through 16 are shown on the display while the keyboard is in record standby, so you can easily check which tracks are already
recorded. See “Level Meter Contents During Record/ Edit Standby” on page E-69 for details.

The level meter refers to the 'stack of lines' above the channel numbers at the bottom of the display. After you record a part to a channel...the 'stack' will have 4 lines. The channel you are preparing to record, will be flashing (it starts with channel 11). You can select channels 11 to 16 to record your playing...by pushing the channel button (just below the display). Then choose the tone you want to record (press ‘Tone’...then enter the number of the tone you want, using the number keypad)...it will display on the screen. You can record each part to a different channel...by pressing ‘Stop’ to end a part, then press ‘song memory’ again to record to the next channel (REC will be flashing...press ‘Start’ to be able to play along with the other parts you have recorded). Make sure you are recording to a new channel (by pressing the desired channel button...under the display). You can ‘erase’ a part by just recording over the original part. If you want, you can also record a ‘built in’ Rhythm, along with your playing...by pressing the rhythm button (after setting the Casio to standby record...’REC’ will be flashing), selecting a rhythm, selecting the mode button (the one you select will light up). You can then press ‘intro’ or ‘variation’ ...and start playing. You can record just the chords (rhythms), which will fill the channels 6 thru 10. After you have played in the chord progression ...press ‘Stop’. You can then record your melody to the chord progression, or add extra instruments, by pressing ‘song memory’ to return to ‘record standby’...the ‘REC’ button flashing.

2. Use the number buttons to select a song number (0 to 4).

Ok, But where in the manual does it tell you WHICH number buttons. There are four number buttons for the Bank and Store. There are many number buttons for the channels, and there are number buttons on the keypad?

This refers to the number pad ‘yes/ no’ buttons...to toggle thru the song slots within the first 5 seconds after pressing the ‘song memory’ button

3. Make the following settings. (this is where you choose your settings)
• Tone number
• Rhythm number
• Tempo
• MODE button

When I recorded my song, I put on Sync start. It gave me a different beat than I chose. Do I press song memory and then in 5 seconds choose tone number, rhythm number, tempo and MODE button. I'm just not quite that fast as a new user. (I'm sure at home you're laughing out loud.) It can be fun dealing with us "ungeeky first-timers."

I promise you, I'm reading the manual. But it is like a new language to me. My friend from Fla. is helping me only until tomorrow morning and we're trying to move me along as quick as possible. It's a WHOLE NEW WORLD from an acoustic piano, but I'm loving it.

1. Press ‘song memory’ button...’REC’ should be flashing to indicate ‘standby record mode’.  Quickly select your song slot (0 to 4). You can now make the other selections (no time limit).

2. Press the Tone button and select the tone you want.

3. Press the Rhythm button, and select the rhythm you want.

4. Now choose tempo & mode.

5. You can then start the song with the ‘Sync/start’ or intro or variation button.
